Dial is an all genres, feel good night held at the pool bar in Shoreditch
the first friday of every month. We decided to create a fun vibrant identity
that reflected the atmosphere of the night. Inspired by the lo-fi marketing
previously used to promote the event, we decided to use coloured stickers
to represent the diversity of the night, positioning them in such away
that they sit playfully on the page. With James
Musgrave as Setup. The oversize
poster shown is silkscreened in 5 colours. Special thanks to Yes
for their advice and assistance.

86 page 5 colour catalogue with and for Hort
titled 'After School Club'. In June 2007 we
held a two day workshop at Hatch Ride Primary School, asking children
to re-draw the studio's back catalogue of record sleeves. Designed as
an exercise book, which was communicated through format, materials (3
papers) and processes (blind debossing), it documented the workshop in
2 parts (Part A & B) and contained the original references (printed
on a lightweight glossy paper). As well as final photographic documentation.
Offset printed with soya based inks by Aldgate
Press, London in an edition of 500 copies, with 3 coloured covers.
You can buy a copy for yourself here.

For Grafik
by Angharad Lewis (March '05)
Anthony Sheret ought to be in school. Actually, he’s not skiving,
he’s been given permission to have the off day off to pay Grafik
a visit. It's not often our interviewees need a letter from their Mum
to get them here but Sheret is definitely an unusual case. Although he’s
yet to sit his ‘A’ levels his graphic design has found many
admirers, including some high profile ones. In January Michael C Place
of Build fame
(and one of Sheret’s heroes) posted a link to his website on bustling
design forum Newstoday. As a result Sheret had so many hits that his service
provider threatened to close him down.
Fortunately the online portfolio is still going strong. It’s a showcase
for that work that he largely does off his own bat. The nearest he’s
come to any formal design training is his school art lesson but he prefers
to work at home, knuckling down to a bit of typeface design and book-making
in his own time.
Like all graphic designers, Sheret has a few obsessions. One of them is
Letraset rub-down lettering. He always carries a few sheets around with
him and uses them creatively, coming up with new letterforms and compositions,
made by transferring the letters to paper in a random way. This is typical
Sheret – he loves taking the materials and paraphernalia of graphic
design and subverting them, one of his projects is a series of Unpredictable
Books, which are made from found typography printed onto salvaged paper.
As well as this slightly seditious streak, in true autodidact style Sheret
does his learning in a very hands-on way. He has a healthy respect for
the formal aspects of design but his education in typography has come
meticulously working on his own faces, and deconstructing existing faces
to explore their properties, something he’s done with Helvetica
by pairing the letters down to the point when they hover on the border
of legibility.
The nearest Sheret has come to a commercial project date (March '05) is
the invitations he designed for his art class’s GCSE show. But with
an application to LCC pending (just the ‘A’ levels to get
through first) he looks set on a very promising path. Watch this space.
